Rap Vs. Hip-Hop
More often than not, Rap and Hip-Hop are placed in the same categories or even said to be the same. Listening tools like ITunes often put both in a mash up genre (Hip-Hop/Rap). However, Rap and Hip-Hop are two different subjects, and possibly genres. A common understanding is that Rap is more the act of, the verb, where as Hip-Hop is the culture, the being, the collaborative sense of all elements. In the 70’s Afrika Bambaataa is who began utilizing the word“Hip-Hop” to describe the culture in which emceeing was one of the four elements that collectively created Hip-Hop. MC and Hip-Hop philosopher KRS-One described both as “Rap is something that is done, While Hip-Hop is something that is lived.”
Musically rap as a genre can change, however, Hip-Hop will remain the same as it’s origin (1520 Sedgwick Ave.) will never change.
I am Hip-Hop. I live Hip-Hop, I am a part of a culture when I speak of Hip-Hop, not so much in refernce to an artist. More so the four key elements of Hip-Hop that bring us all together.
